In memory of beloved member Giovanni Favretti, Amor Artis will present Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610. In this richly varied collection of psalms, hymns, canticles, and motets, Monteverdi juxtaposes the two musical styles vying for predominance at the turn of the17th century—the stile antico and the stile moderno—demonstrating his mastery of each. Amor Artis will be joined by a diverse array of early-Baroque instruments like the cornetto and sackbut, played by the experts of the Dark Horse Consort, alongside lutes and members of the violin family, immersing audiences in the kaleidoscopic splendor of the early 17th-century Venetian sound world filtered through Monteverdi’s matchless imagination.
